EIZO Monitors: A Legacy of Innovation, Quality and Sustainability

By Colin Woodley, CEO EIZO UK

History of EIZO monitors: From simple displays to essential professional tools

As a child of the 80’s, my first experience of a “computer screen” was the 10” television connected to the Sinclair ZX81 in the local WH Smith.
For years the older generation told us that sitting too close to the TV would “make you go blind” and yet with the home computer revolution, we went from sitting several feet away to merely inches.

Suddenly, we were no longer looking at a screen just for entertainment but also to play games, write letters or create databases.

By the end of the decade, many of us were working on dedicated computer monitors. Those early screens (which strangely always came with a dust cover) were simple dumb terminals with a primary function to show alpha numeric data.

At this time, EIZO had already been developing screens in its local market of Japan for 20 years and introduced its first branded monitor into Europe in 1985.

Almost 40 years later and EIZO Corporation remains the only dedicated specialist monitor manufacturer, producing quality imaging products for its target markets.

EIZO’s global success comes from a philosophy of enriching people in their professional and personal lives by producing imaging solutions that are so advanced, it allows people to focus on the importance of their work and not how they do it.
This philosophy originates from a singe question. “What are people looking at?”

For almost 60 years, what we look at and how we engage with our screens has evolved. From popular text-based applications at the end of 20th century, through to life saving surgical imagery of today, EIZO has always been there providing constant, high-resolution solutions.

Today, people spend longer scrutinising the images on their screen than at any other time in our history. As a result, within a brief period of time, the computer screen has gone from an afterthought to the most important tool in any IT workstation.

The advancement of digital imagery has resulted in professionals demanding more and varying features from their monitors, creating a new reality that one size (or one monitor) no longer fits all.

EIZO monitor design: Quality, reliability, and user-focused innovation

Every new monitor life starts from an EIZO engineers understanding of who is going to use the screen and what are they going to use it for. This understanding helps define those key elements of the user’s needs which EIZO then build into the monitor.

Quality of image and product reliability are the standard features at the core of product design. EIZO then designs specific functionality, which allows the screen to be self-calibrating, or adhere to industry specific standards, be rugged, waterproof or any number of differing features that meets the needs of the customers.

How the user engages with the monitor is as important as what is shown on the screen and so EIZO engineers also design the monitor around the ergonomic needs of the user. They take into consideration the type of work being performed, the potential working environment, how long the monitor will be used for and many other nuances which can all impact the user experience.

As a result, EIZO’s solutions help customers make decisions based on the products we build and the solutions we recommend. This commitment to product design enables users to look after people’s health, keep everybody safe, protect their wealth, provide quality entertainment, or just get people home safely.

EIZO is so confident in the quality of its screens, it led to the introduction of a market leading 5-year warranty in 2003. A standard warranty on desktop displays that remains unique in the market over 20 years later.

How EIZO leads in sustainable monitor design and environmental responsibility

Not only do EIZO focus on the needs of its customers but has always worked to be an ethical and community focussed manufacturer, considering the needs of the environment and the people living in it.

EIZO first published its environmental policy in 1998 and today continues to be a global leader in sustainable working.

EIZO no longer just thinks about how people want to use their monitors, but also the wider impact of the monitor from its creation to the eventual end of the monitors life. EIZO do not just consider what the users needs are but also those needs of the local and global community who are indirectly impacted by the work they do.

EIZO’s sustainable approach to product design and manufacture has been leading the market for almost 60 years and will continue to evolve and improve in line with customer’s needs.

You can read more about EIZO’s commitment to sustainability in the white paper Sustainable by Design: Making a positive impact for people and planet.

Nobody does more to improve the customers experience of using a monitor.

When you consider your next deployment of IT equipment, take a moment to consider the most fundamental method of engagement with your data, the monitor, and do not just settle for the basic screen that normally comes as standard with the computer.

You, your company, your team, and your customer deserves better.
